About ALSA

The term
An 'ambiguous loss' occurs when a loved one suddenly disappears (eg. missing), remains out of reach (eg. immigration) or is lost psychologically (eg. dementia). It is the most stressful and traumatic type of loss, uncontrollable and enduring, leaving those affected in limbo. The term was coined by Pauline Boss in the 1970s. Founder
Chloe Swinton founded ALSA after many years of working in the field supporting families and individuals, and recognising her own ambiguous losses in the past. Ambiguous loss is a social issue which affects most of us in some way, but few people know of the term. Chloe has been inspired by the work of Pauline Boss in the US who has written many books on the subject.

Vision
A compassionate world supportive and understanding of ambiguous loss.

Mission

Chloe's mission is to initially use her expertise and skills to provide support with a range of therapies, and to raise awareness through training and talks in the UK.

Aim
Profits are put back into growing the venture to further benefit others, with the future intention of creating workbooks available throughout the UK, offering therapeutic self help support to those experiencing ambiguous loss.
